High concentration contrast media and radiation dose reduction in CT vascular imaging

by Professor R. Iezzi

Currently there is huge and mounting pressure to reduce the amount of ionizing radiation to which patients undergoing CT scans are exposed. One way to do this is simply to reduce the current-time and voltage settings of the X-ray tube. Unfortunately this increases the noise level in the final image. This article describes how, in CT scans of the vascular system, the use of high concentration contrast media can compensate for increased noise levels so that high quality images can be obtained even with low radiation levels.
